Virgin Galactic is a company which plans to provide the first commercial flights to space.
Flights currently cost €150,000 with a deposit of €15,000 payable immediately. The flight will take about 3.5 hours from take-off to landing. Despite the high price for such a short journey almost 400 people from all over the world have already booked tickets.
The ship these passengers will fly in is actually made up of two separate ships, Space Ship 1 (also called White Knight 1) and Space Ship 2. Space Ship 1 is the larger of the 2 ships and is actually used to carry Space Ship 1 to a height of 50,000 feet. Space Ship 2 will carry 6 passengers along with 2 pilots.
At 50,000 feet Space Ship 1 releases and fires up its rockets sending it travelling at a speed of over 2,500 mph. This allows it to travel to an altitude of 110,000 feet (space officially starts at 100,000 feet). Once the craft has reached this altitude, the engines are turned off. Passengers are allowed to release their seatbelts and float around the cabin in zero-gravity for approximately 6 minutes. Outside the large windows passengers will have a wonderful view of the Earth below.
To re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere Space Ship 2 folds its wings up, and then returns them to their original position before gliding back onto the runway.
The flights will take off and land from a specially built SpacePort in the New Mexico desert in the United States.
