Valentina Tereshkova was a Cosmonaut. She was the first woman to travel into space.
From 16th June to 19th June, 1963, Tereshkova travelled around Earth 45 times—once every 88 minutes—in the spacecraft Vostok 6. She operated the spacecraft using only hand controls. When the space flight was over, she landed back on Earth in a parachute.
Tereshkova was the first space traveller who had not been a test pilot beforehand. She was actually an expert parachute jumper. She started parachuting as a hobby. She made over 125 jumps before entering space-flight training school.
